It was a quarter after four in the afternoon, and Adrian Dolohov was leaning against the wall at the clock tower, smoking stick after stick of his Clove cigars. It was a beautiful afternoon and he always went to the clock tower at this time because he loved looking at the sunset while smoking a pack away. He then sighed audibly, letting the smoke drag from his face. For some reason, he just could not bring himself to kick the habit. He then cringed when he remembered how his father chastised him for smoking during a social gathering for noble families. Indeed, he was shamed intensely but still he did not stop. He merely took another pack from his secret stash and smoked non-stop until the late morning.
As he once again let the smoke drag, he then remembered that he sent his owl Odin to Amelie, bearing a note with the words, I miss you. Meet me at the clock tower later at four, on it. He just sighed, as he recounted the times that he had to evade her for his father was now beginning to thrust into his hands the responsibility of acting as the next in line heir to his father's position. His father was just recently given the title of Viscount of the House of Campbell by no less than his grandfather, the retired viscount Garrett Campbell, despite the ceremony being disrupted because of a psycho killer rampage that left many casualties, including the strongest guards who served under his cousin, Justin Law. He then stopped his thoughts for a while and as he took another long drag from his cigar, he wondered whether Amelie would show up, knowing that she obviously was angry at him for ditching her and not answering her owls. He obviously had a lot of explaining to do to her.

Amelie sat across Chester Collins inside the library. Her plan was to actually get rid of her homeworks ahead of time just to get a lot of time to spare leisurely. However, Chester showed up and turned her supposedly study time to chatting time. Despite him ruining her original plan, she found herself grinning at the younger student for she never had so much fun in the library. He had always been a nice to her, kind of sweet, actually. He was her little brother’s best friend and she had always treated her like she treated her little brother. She had always been fond of him for chester always dropped by their house during breaks and whenever he opens his mouth Amelie just could not stop laughing.
Once again, Amelie found herself laughing heartily as he recited a very cheesy yet very funny four-liner rhyme he obviously composed on the spot. She stopped laughing when she saw how serious Chester looked before forcing out a laugh. The look on his face made her frown. She was about say something when she felt the heavy glare of the student behind her back. In just a matter of minutes, the two of them got thrown out of the library by the librarian herself. As they laughed and walked down the corridor, Chester suddenly fished out a scented parchment out of his pocket and handed it over to her. She was about to unfold it when a familiar owl landed on her shoulder and extended its leg to her face. Adrian’s owl. And Amelie’s throat felt dry. “Alright, alright, relax.” She laughed at the owl’s enthusiasm as she untied the note. The owl quickly flew away and before it was gone, she had already read the note. “I’m sorry Chester but I have to go now.” She eyed him apologetically. Chester just nodded, looking quite torn at her sudden goodbye.
As she made her way to the clock tower, she did not know what to feel. When the clock strokes four she was at least five minutes away from her destination. She had been wanting to see Adrian, especially after hearing about an attack in the turnover ceremony that resulted into a lot of casualties. Wanting to take her mind off of everything at least for a while, she decided to unfold Chester’s parchment and found herself reading a well-written poem which was both sweet and flattering. It was the type of poem a boy would write for his girlfriend… Totally not paying mind to her surroundings, she ended up bumping into someone. “Sorry, I was rea-,” She trailed off when she smelled it. It was him, there was no mistaking it. Seeing him elicited mixed feelings. She was still mad at him for evading her, yet, she found herself glad that he wasn’t harmed and like always glad to see him.
In her pheriperal, she saw that a few heads were turning toward their direction and some Slytherin girls nearby glared at her. She sighed internally. She had not even had a chance to speak to him and it was already time to start the show. She gave him a meaningful look and glared at his cloves before dusting herself off, as if she got germs because she bumped into him. “Dolohov, you are a useless drunkard who has no future ahead of you.” She said rather loudly, purposely running her mouth as a band of seventh year slytherins walked pass them. Her statement made everyone mind their own business again, each seemingly used to the way she regarded Adrian. She sighed and focused on him, absently folding the parchment she had been reading before crossing her arms over her chest. “So, you’re still alive.” She said sarcastically after a few moments mad at him for evading her.

As he took another drag from his cigar, Adrian wondered whether Amelie would indeed show up. He knew that he would have to do a lot of explaining, with what happened at the turnover ceremony as a starting point. Right there and then, he knew that he was lucky to be alive, having missed the murderer's attack by a mere fraction of a centimeter. He felt sorry for the guards and the others who died as a result. During that time, he was tempted to send an owl to her, to assure her that he was safe but decided against it because that would make her worry even more. Besides, his owl was being used as courier to send in distress messages to the auror headquarters.
He managed to smoke his sixth cigar of the day when he heard footsteps approaching. He then looked up expectantly to see who it was. However to his surprise and disappointment, it was a hoard of Slytherin students who apparently wanted to enjoy the view also. Several of the students, most notably girls, waved at him eagerly. He then gave off a short wave and a smile and then looked away. He then looked using his peripheral vision at them and saw them giggle and swoon. He merely sighed, letting the smoke cloud his vision. These girls should have known any better, he then thought to himself, taking quite another long drag. He then felt his owl land on his shoulder, and he beckoned it to rest on his arm. "Odin, what's taking Amelie so long? Did you make sure she gets my letter?" he then asked his owl. He was rather surprised to see that it nodded. "Oh I see. Thanks for the help pal. Owl treats for you when I pass by the owlery," he then said to the owl, who flew away.
He then turned back to his smoking when someone apparently bumped into him. Looking to see who it was, he then realized that it was the one he was waiting for. Amelie. How I missed you so much, he thought bitterly. Suddenly, he then saw her give him a meaningful look that signified that she was going to show the others the usual treatment she did for him. He then nodded slightly to show his approval and pretended to watch helplessly as she hammered on him yet again. He then sighed audibly and said, "For your information Sparks, I have not touched a single shot glass all day and besides, I don't smell like I have been drinking." He just did not like being hammered on regarding his drinking habits except if Amelie did the actual scolding.
However, out of the corner of his eye, he saw her absently folding what looked like a piece of scented parchment. Suitors again, he thought to himself, looking livid. "Yeah, with all my limbs and clothes intact. Still alive as I would ever be," he then replied to her sarcastic remark. Somehow, he couldn't blame her for doing so. He then took another long drag from his cigar, this time making the smoke go in ringlets to distract people. When he had achieved his purpose, he then took Amelie's hand and said, "We need to go someplace private. We have a lot of things to talk about." He then pulled her gently over to the stairs for a walk. Finally after a few minutes, he found an empty classroom. After unlocking it, he then led her inside and closed the door behind him. He then hugged her from behind, never wanting to let go. "I'm really sorry for not replying, I had a lot of things to take care of," he then explained to her. Somehow, he hoped that she would forgive him.

Amelie was getting tired of all the hiding and the secrets and she had to stifle the urge to just shout to everybody that she and Adrian were together and that they had been together for six months by then. Amelie rolled her eyes. On the eyes of the untrained, she looked quite irked by his response. However, to those who really knew her, they would perceive the look on her face as a look of slight impatience and a load of exasperation. “Apparently you haven’t yet… at least for today. Not that that would have made a difference since you already smell like your death sticks.” Amelie made a face, not really needing to act at that moment for she hated it when Adrian smoked his lungs out day and night. She moved closer and was about to chastise him discreetly when she realized the poem flew out of her grip.
As she bended over to pick it up, she could not help but smile. She really appreciated Chester’s ‘little something’ for it was both random and sweet. Well it was not really random for he said it was supposed to be his super late seventeenth birthday gift to her…Upon noticing the livid look on his face, the hufflepuff suddenly became conscious and shoved the scented paper in to her pocket.
Amelie forced out a dry chuckle. He obviously thought he could get away by just being sarcastic about it all. Being not that type who liked writing, she wrote to him only when there was something important she wanted to ask him or just wanted to talk to him about. She did not write useless notes to her boyfriend like other girls do. So, all she was asking was a reply, a one-word reply to her semi-rare owls would be enough, and she knew it was not too much to ask for, for she always answered whenever he sent her letters. She was about to talk to him about it when he took her hand and led her somewhere private.
Amelie nodded and let herself be led by him, trying to look so shocked and quite mad about being dragged by ‘Dolohov’ out of the courtyard. Upon reaching an empty classroom, Adrian led her in and quickly closed the door behind him. Before she had the chance to open her mouth to speak, she felt him hug her from behind and shortly after that, she heard him apologize. She sighed, reached up to stroke his hair and enjoyed the familiar feel of it beneath her fingers, soft and smooth. She gently turned to face him without getting out of his embrace. “Why is it so hard to stay mad at you?” She asked softly, making a face. “So, what is it that have you been busying yourself with aside from drinking and smoking?” Amelie smirked at him, curious. As Adrian continued to hug her, he could feel her warmth and how he missed it so much. Apparently, the six months they have been together have been such a bumpy ride for the both of them. Aside from the fact they have to keep their relationship a secret, which was very difficult to do, they have to act in front of everyone as though they were natural enemies. Added to that was the fact that he was busy for the past few weeks. He knew that if it was difficult for her, having to wait for his reply to her owls, it was even more difficult for him because in the first place, he hasn’t been able to even read them and make a proper reply to all of them because his father had given orders to his guards to intercept all owls for him. It was a good thing his guards were sensitive enough not to read the letters, or else he would have been in big trouble. He merely smiled as she turned to face him without getting out of his embrace and heard her ask why it was difficult for her to stay mad at him. “It’s because you love me too much to stay mad at me. And I love you very much, I really do,” he then said as he continued to hug her, this time bringing his hand to her hair and gently stroking it. “You are beautiful every single day and I am glad to have finally seen you again,” he added.
He then gently released her and looked into her eyes. He could not believe that he finally saw her again. After all this time, he really thought that he was going to lose her, with everything that was happening. He sighed audibly and said, “There has been a lot of events that happened, and I am sure you have heard about it. Someone apparently tried to crash on my father’s turnover ceremony and desperately tried to kill an innocent girl just because he was caught in the act. Tragic losses indeed; there were a lot of casualties.” Adrian shuddered as he remembered how the killer’s wand was pointed at the back of his head and he almost got killed if not for the guard who managed to save him. “After that, I had to obey my father and learn the ways of being the next heir. That is what was keeping me busy all this time. My father had my guards remove all of the things that distracted me, and intercepting your owls was one of them. It was indeed a good thing they were kind enough not to read the letters. They bundled it up and gave it to me when I came back here, and I haven’t got the chance to read them,” he then added, looking grim.
He then sighed once again, looking agitated. He was suddenly having the urge to take a smoke but he tried desperately to stop the urge. “Look, if I had my way, I would have defied him vehemently; but my father’s determination and drive at being the viscount were something I could not bear to spoil for him. But now I am back here, I will make sure that all my attention would be focused on making up for my lost time with you. So will you forgive me?” he asked, as he walked right next to her, took her right hand and locked his fingers with hers.

Under any other circumstances, Amelie would have rolled her eyes at the words he just uttered, however it was her love that said it and it was romantic. “Yeah, you know that. That’s why your head is too huge already.” Amelie sighed. “It’s a wonder your neck could support it.” Amelie joked as she stared at his face. She missed him, so much and she could see that he did miss her too. She gave him a small smile, wishing everything about their relationship was not complicated. There was nothing she would not do to make their relationship less complicated.
Amelie listened to as he spoke, her gaze focused on his handsome face. When he mentioned the turnover attack, the very event that worried her ever since she heard of it, she found herself so focused on him and what he was saying. “Someone attacked a big ceremony just to kill an innocent girl because she caught him in the act? That’s whoa. What did the girl see him do anyway? Was he caught? Is everyone fine? I don’t know Dri, but I think someone on the media is trying to keep all the details a secret. Not a single newspaper printed anything about the attacker or his whereabouts. Papers are filled with the tragic deaths of some nobles, their guards and other casualties brought about by this ‘ripper’ and nothing else. You have no idea how relieved I am to see you’re well. When I first heard about it…” Amelie trailed off and shook her head. The fact that she had to walk around the school trying to look like her happy, single and always available while she worried about him did not make her life any easier these days.
As she listened to him apologize, she could not help but not stay mad at him. “I forgive you.” Amelie said softly and gave him a peck on the lips before turning away from him and transfiguring a table into a comfortable sofa. “I know this sounds ironic but I’m glad you did not read about any of my owls. Since you won’t be able to reply, I’d rather tell you personally what I wrote on them.” She gave him a smile, slumped down on the sofa and patted the spot next to her, urging him to join her. Suddenly, she remembered Alaric. She told him to keep quiet about him being on the secret for she wanted to break it to Adrian herself. “You may ask me anything about the owls but first, do you know Alaric Stouner?” She inquired as she tried to think of a way to tell him she told someone their secret. Adrian smiled then chuckled at what Amelie had just said. “Oh I see. I’m that cocky isn’t it?” he replied, a playful smile resting on his lips. “Yet I know despite everything, you still miss me,” he added as he continued to gaze at her intently. He knew that she was thinking of how complicated their relationship right now was. If only they were in a normal relationship, they wouldn’t even need to hide inside the room just to see each other. “How I wish we could do this more often, seeing each other without others giving a care on what we were doing,” he then said, sadness evident on his tone. “If only people would accept…” he trailed off, his gaze never leaving her.
He merely listened to her as she gave him her piece of mind regarding what he just said. He knew that she was deathly worried about what happened to him. “Yes, apparently he managed to annihilate almost the whole Advance guard and even used some of them as puppets using the imperius curse. It was a good thing the girl was not killed, she’s my cousin by the way. Apparently, she was the only witness to the murder he committed way back before,” he then said, looking serious. “He escaped, lifting the curse on his puppets and left a lot of dead bodies there. My father did everything in his power to silence the media about the killer, because he wanted to do an investigation of his own. He’s working with my other cousin right now,” he added, suddenly thinking about his father’s actions. He wished silently to himself that he could help his father in tracking down this madman. “Don’t worry, I managed to survive despite that awkward moment when one of his puppets pointed his wand at the back of my head. Good thing someone rescued me,” he then assured her, as he reached out his hand tentatively to lightly touch her cheek.
He could not help but feel very relieved when she accepted his apology and when she gave him a peck on the lips, could feel himself blushing furiously. He then watched her transfigure the nearest table into a sofa, and he then sat next to her, putting one arm around her shoulder. His face then screwed in concentration as he listened to her about the owls. His brow furrowed slightly when she asked him if he knew Alaric Stouner. “Yes, he’s a good friend of mine and he’s our family’s official watchmaker. What about him?” he asked, not quite understanding why she asked.

Amelie let out a chuckle, rolled her eyes and did the universal gesture that said that is exactly my point upon hearing his words about himself being cocky and all. A small pout played on her lips at his next remark. “Maybe I should try the impossible and not miss you one time. Just might help deflate that big head of yours.” Amelie hit his arm with the back of her hand playfully. Then the next thing she knew, serious Adrian was back and he was talking about their complicated relationship. He must have read her actions again. Amelie loved that he knew her too well but sometimes she wished he was not capable of knowing what her thoughts were all about almost all the time, especially when they were not pleasant. “Hey,” Amelie said soothingly, rubbing his arm. “Don’t think that way, please. We can’t be brought down by peer pressure. We agreed to that, remember?” Amelie tried lightening the mood but she herself sounded sad and her smile did not reach her eyes. Given a different situation, which did not involve her, Adrian and their secret relationship, she would have no problem getting her or anyone’s hopes up. “One day we would have to rid ourselves of this secret and when that time comes, people will have to accept us… They just wouldn’t have a choice.” Amelie added, sighing and once again finding that her own troubles were much harder to handle than those of her friends’ she often help solve.
A slow “Oh my goddess…” was all Amelie could muster after hearing all that her secret boyfriend just said. “I’m so glad your cousin was not harmed but the authorities must do something about this murderer. Who knows what he would do the next time he strikes.” Amelie said, sounding frustrated and anxious at the same time. As she gazed at Adrian, she felt gladness settle on the pit of her stomach. He had survived. When he talked about his father collaborating with one of his cousins to investigate on the attacker at the turnover ceremony, she could not help but say. “That is a good way of investigating… keeping the press out of it all.” Amelie’s expression turned from serious to anxious. “Are you sure you’re alright?” Amelie asked, worry evident in her tone as she literally touched the back of his head, as if to ensure that a hole was not bored there somewhere.
Amelie pretended not to notice how red his face got as she slouched on the sofa. The empty classroom was as cosy as any empty classroom could become. But, with Adrian’s arms around her shoulders, Amelie could not think of any other place she’d rather be. She sighed in contentment as she leaned on his upper torso. “Right, well I guess you would not have any problem with what I’m going to tell you.” Amelie said, pausing to choose her words and ended up with her usual straightforward manner of speaking. “I told him about us. I know how much you value our secret, even your sister doesn’t know about us, but… I think Alaric could be trusted when I told him and I still trust him now. I’m so sorry.” Amelie lowered her gaze, ashamed of her little slip up. Adrian had kept his end of their deal and she did not.
All of a sudden, she found herself anxious and broken about Adrian and their secret relationship again. He was used to being treated as a noble, being accepted, being looked up to. Amelie could not bear to take his good life away from him. She knew the moment Alaric blabbed to anyone, Adrian’s reputation would be forever ruined and she was certain it could only bring bad things to him. As for her, she did not have any problems for she was tough. She was used to dealing with the nasty. For the first time, she asked herself if being with him was selfish on her part. Was it possible that Adrian found her selfish too? Did any part of their secret relationship benefit Adrian at all? Well he said he loved her that night at the Three Broomsticks and she believed him… As she contemplated all these, she kept her gaze on the floor, unable to look at Adrian.

Adrian merely looked at her with amusement evident on his face. Apparently, the mere thought of her not missing him was making him all the more amused, for he knew she could not do it at all. “Well, I guess I would like to see you try that one day. I’ll bet my watch you’ll be sending me an owl within fifteen seconds after that,” he said, laughing. However, the moment the topic shifted to their secret relationship, he saw the sadness within her smile and as he listened to her, he realized how hard their situation was for the both of them. He then felt her rubbing his arm and he stopped the motion with his free hand, holding her hand and placing it on his cheek. “I understand perfectly what you said. I guess people would not really have any choice but to accept once we have the courage to bravely face them. Don’t fret; it pains me to see you like that,” he said as his other hand clasped her free hand and laced his fingers with hers. Adrian had always been happy go lucky, acting without a care among others but when it comes to Amelie, he could always feel a wave of emotions coursing through him, making him feel something that he had never felt before in his entire life.
He then nodded with fervor upon her seeing her reaction to the events he had just related. He knew that she would definitely have such a reaction because he would have reacted the same way. “It was surreal; I had absolutely no idea that I would be involved in such an event. It was a good thing we managed to keep her alive, or else the murderer would have managed to fulfill his crazy plan,” he said, a mixture of relief and apprehension on his face. He was well aware that the murderer would strike again, and maybe even catch them off-guard just like the first time. “Well, the press literally swarmed us after what happened. If not for my father, they might have kept watch over our manor, hovering and ready to pick up news the moment it flies out of our doorstep. My cousin was the head of the ruling families that is why even the press had to listen to him,” he then explained, remembering the event vividly. He was very grateful to Justin for trying to keep the details hushed for it stressed his father very much. He then felt her hand touching the back of his head, as though checking for holes. “Oh don’t worry, if my head had a hole bored into it, I wouldn’t be appearing to you right now,” he then said, as he playfully ruffled her hair.
As he kept his arm on her shoulder, Adrian could not imagine how lucky he was to be alive and holding the girl he loves dearly in his arms. He knew the pain she had to deal with being separated for a long time from him. He then felt her lean towards him and he put his free arm around her, pulling her closer to him. He then listened to her as she filled him on the details regarding her telling Alaric about the circumstances of their secret relationship. He nodded fervently at the right moments and when she finally finished, he could see her lower her gaze and realized that she seemed ashamed of what happened. Adrian was silent for a good one minute, thinking hard. At the back of his mind, he did not mind whether either of them managed to tell some people about their relationship, and he knew that Alaric could be trusted, for he knew quite a lot about their family and yet chose to keep the information to himself. “You don’t need to apologize, I have always trusted Alaric. He’ll be a good secret-keeper, he knew quite a lot about our family and he would have chosen to tell the press but he went through the trouble of keeping it,” he finally said, after a minute of silence.
He suddenly realized that his silence must have made her uncomfortable. She still kept her gaze on the floor, apparently unable to look at him. Even though he could not know what she was thinking at that exact moment, he was having a slight idea on what it could be. He knew that she was concerned more about his life than her own, and he did not intend to keep it that way, because he knew that in their relationship, they made a promise not to own each other, but to always stand for each other and she bearing the brunt of it all was something he could not bear to watch. He then gently took both of her shoulders and raised her in such a way that their eyes met. “Listen to me, Amelie. Even if I do not know what you are exactly thinking, I think I have a pretty good idea on what it might be,” he began, as he kept his gaze at her, looking serious. “You know, I have always despised being born into a noble wizarding family. There are times that I wished I was just born into an ordinary one, because I am totally smothered by my father pressuring me to take over. What good is there to being a noble if people have such high expectations of you? When I first met you, I thought to myself that you are the one who would save me from all this, for when I am with you, I am myself once again,” he could feel himself unable to look at her because he was feeling emotional once again, and it was only with her that he managed to show it. “You don’t have to deal with this alone, for I am always with you to bear it all, for we have promised that we will always stand for each other. When I said that ‘I love you’ during that fateful night, I meant that I love you forever,” he finally said as he leaned his head in front on her shoulder, unable to look at her.

Amelie playfully hit him on the arm, laughing at his sort of arrogant expression. Apparently he was aware of that incapability of hers. “Within fifteen seconds?” Amelie cracked up. “Wow, Dri, you’re quite confident. I’m impressed.” Amelie continued to laugh as she shook her head. When the conversation turned to their relationship Amelie felt all the lightness in the air fade into nothing. As she listened to Adrian’s calm words about their relationship, she could not help but be assured. As he held her hand, she felt even more confident that everything would be fine and that the two of them were still in control. In other words, everything would be up to them. Amelie shifted to face him and gave him a small smile. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.” She said before resting her head on his shoulder. After a few minutes of comfortable silence, she looked up and said. “Why have we turned so serious? We’re supposed to be enjoying this opportunity. Screw peer pressure.” Amelie shook her head and let out a chuckle or two to break the tension.
Amelie nodded at his words, listening intently for her concern and curiosity grew each passing moment. “Any murderer’s plan can’t be allowed to prosper. That’s for sure.” Amelie thought aloud. Suddenly, she remembered the signup sheet nailed to the door of the three broomsticks and realized that Adrian did not know that she joined the order of Aurors. When he started talking about the press, she nodded at all the right times as she listened attentively, deciding to tell him all about the order of aurors later. “Well that’s media people for you. They’d never stop without hearing what they want to hear. It’s a good thing your cousin is influential.” Amelie stated, looking serious. But, not for long for Adrian had her laughing at what he said next. “Oh you’d better not show up with a hole on your head. Remember, hell hath no fury like Amelie Sparks scorned. Wait, have you ever had the misfortune of seeing me mad?” Amelie smirked at Adrian as she figuratively rummaged her brain. “And don’t even try coming to me with a hole on your head just to instigate that kind of reaction.” Amelie jested, grinning widely.
Amelie tried her best not to squirm at Adrian’s silence. It was hard for her to remain calm when there was a possibility that he would be mad at what she did or worst, disappointed. Choosing to remain silent to let him process the information she just dropped on him, Amelie just eyed him with a wary expression. Truth was, she knew she’d regret ever letting Alaric in on to the secret the moment she saw any trace of anger or disappointment or anything of the sort on her secret boyfriend’s face. When he finally spoke, Amelie shocked herself when she let out a breath that she obviously had been holding for over a minute. She gasped and got out of his arms for a while and straightened up to catch her breath. “For a moment I thought you were going to be mad at me after what I did. Thank you for understanding.” Amelie told Adrian sincerely.
Adrian surprised Amelie by being so insightful. His words, even though he claimed to just had an idea of what she might be thinking, sounded too much like he could read her mind. As he spoke, Amelie looked at his face but never his eyes, still feeling a mixture of emotions that was almost too much to bare. But, when he said he loved her, she mechanically peered into the windows of his soul and saw for herself the sincerity and the truth behind his words. Amelie felt her eyes sting and her heart stop. Adrian’s words did not only reach her ears, it penetrated her soul and shook her inmost being. And, as she continued to gaze into his eyes, she felt a tear slide down her cheeks but she did not mind. “I meant what I said before too. I’m so sorry I doubted you.” Amelie buried her head on his shoulder, unable to look at him. After a few moments, she managed to look back at him. “We should do something to celebrate you being fine after the turnover attack. How much time do we have left?” Amelie suggested, a smile on her face and as she eyed Adrian quizzically, her eyes sparkled. [/size][/blockquote]
