The Ravenclaw spent her day in the hospital, with her father beside her mother’s bed. Up to that very moment, despite her parents’ reassurances, Prudence still felt liable for her mother’s asthma attack. She still could remember how her mother and father witnessed her, or rather the girl who looked like her, got slashed by a sword on the right upper arm. It had been a horrible scene and Prue cringed as she literally saw herself got hurt. The young Ravenclaw even remembered how the scream of her mother and the girl’s sharp cry pierced her ears and her heart simultaneously. The mixture was heart wrenching. As the sound replayed in her mind, she once again felt down for not being able to thank the girl. Up to that moment, she still had no idea who the girl was. She felt frustrated not knowing who saved her life.
It was almost forty eight hours since the tragedy and Prudence still haven’t slept a wink and ten minutes ago she bid goodbye to her father with a promise that she would not go out of the school without an adult with her. Her father may have been clueless before but now that one of the aurors filled him in about the involvement of his daughter with the attacker, it was obvious that he had become extra protective. She could tell that he would go infinite lengths to protect her and her mother. The mere thought of her father calmed her. He always made her feel safe…
As Prudence stood on the Astronomy Tower, staring idly at the still Hogwarts grounds, scenes from the ceremony replayed in her head, and in her mind, faces of people appeared as she thought of them, her mother, her father, her cousins Adrian and Vasilisa, her friend Justin and her boyfriend Alaric. Boyfriend. Up to that moment, she could not believe that she was with someone. All her life she never thought she would fall in love. Yes, she loved him but it was weird referring to him as her boyfriend simply because it would mean that she was going to be his girlfriend. She did not even know how to be someone’s girlfriend. Prudence let out a hysterical laughter. And when her mind strayed back to the event that her father was going to arrange, Prudence burst in a fit of hysterical laughter for about thirty seconds before feeling a tear roll on her cheek and drop on her formal gown she had been in since the day before yesterday.

Alaric Stouner was patrolling the corridors, donned in his usual attire for class with the perfect badge stuck to his robe, doing his job as a prefect for Ravenclaw House. He actually did not know why he suddenly wanted to do the task, maybe it was because he felt that he was significantly neglecting his job. Not wanting to receive a summon from the Head of House herself, he decided to perform his task dutifully. In just a few minutes of patrolling, he managed to avert a potential duel and caught a couple of troublemakers who were about to break inside the girl’s bathroom. However, what intrigued him was when he managed to walk into a group of students whispering among themselves and laughing deviously and upon seeing him; they suddenly stopped talking and broke off. In his mind, he was curious as to whom or what they were talking about but after a few minutes of thinking, he mentally shook his head for it wasn’t really his business anyway. After he did a few more minutes of circling around the corridors, he decided to go up to the astronomy tower to unwind for a job well done.
As he made his way towards the staircases leading to the towers, his mind was filled with unsettling thoughts. As he sighed audibly and thrusted his hands inside his pockets, his mind went back to the time when Adrian sent him an urgent owl, telling him to meet him urgently at the dungeons. When he arrived at the meeting place, he was surprised to see a much stressed looking Adrian leaning casually on the walls. He could not forget the very first question he raised the moment they locked eyes: you’re Prudence’s boyfriend right? Upon hearing the question, his initial reaction was to ask how he had known about it but before he even had a chance to speak, Adrian sighed and began to fill him in on the details regarding the Turnover ceremony that involved quite a lot of people, including Prudence. All he knew was that after Adrian finished relating the story and after bidding farewell, reminding him to take care of Prudence, he was very confused. For one, Prudence had never told him about it and what made him uneasy was the fact that there was a threat to her life. Now he knew the reason why she acted as though she didn’t want him to get involved: she feared for his safety since he has a death prophecy hanging above him. Silently, he cursed his death prophecy for limiting his opportunities to protect his girlfriend… his girlfriend. He found himself smiling at the thought. He never really thought that she would return his feelings and he knew that it was worth the effort and emotions that drained him to have her open her heart to him. Knowing that she was afraid to fall in love, he promised to her that he would never break her heart and that he will always be there to catch her and never let her fall.
As he climbed up the last few steps that would lead him to the balcony, he could not help but think of her and what could she be doing at this time. All he knew was that he sorely missed her very much, and that the moment they would meet each other, he would hug her and tell her that he loved her very much and that he would always be there for her no matter what the cost. However, he knew that he should not reveal to her abruptly that he knew everything that happened to her for it would make her worry about him more and he did not want that to happen. When he finally found himself at the balcony, his eyes found the person he truly wanted to see. He could see that she was dressed very beautifully, as though she just came from a party, which he assumed was the ceremony but he could not help but be worried since two days have already passed since the ceremony happened. What made his heart melt even more was the fact that he heard her laugh hysterically then she looked like she was about to cry. Knowing that she needed emotional support at this point in time, he casually moved close to her and wrapped his arms on her, hugging her from behind. “I missed you very much, Prue. I am glad to see you here,” he said softly, as he gently hugged her, never wanting to let go.

As the scenes continued on whirling in her mind, she found herself being eaten up by sorrow mixed with guilt so paralyzing she wanted to just stay where she was a never move again. Technically, Peter killed all the victims but Prue felt that she was figuratively responsible for all the murders. If she did not attend the ceremony in the first place, no one would have been harmed for the thought of attacking the royal ceremony would not have even crossed Peter’s mind. If only she did not attend… but she had valuable information, she was supposed to inform Justin about Peter’s breakout. She remembered suddenly as she wiped with the back of her hand what was left of the sole tear. A bitter voice reminded her that Justin already knew about the information and that she went there basically to not purposely kill almost all of the skilled guardians and… she almost collapsed like a sack of potatoes as she thought of him. He took the sword for her. He died because of her just like the other girl got injured because of her. Another hysterical laughter came out of her lips and just as she was about to collapse, she felt a strong pair of arms hug her from behind.
And when she heard Alaric’s voice, she found herself turning around to face him. Instinctively she buried her face in his chest and allowed him to just hold her in his arms for a few minutes. She was too overwhelmed to speak. She missed him very much and was so glad he turned up just in time to catch her. Just as promised. He caught her before she hit the ground. Literally. Figuratively. Her mind had been reeling and she did not know what conclusions she was about to come up with… the tower was high after all. If she died, Peter would probably leave her family alone. She most certainly have taken that chance if Alaric did not show up and remind her that she was loved by someone and the she had a reason to live. She had to ensure that the death prophecy would not catch up on him. The thought filled her with strength and she gently pushed him away and stood to face him.
For a moment she was silent, not knowing what to say. She just reached the conclusion that her mere presence could cause a lot of deaths was still in her mind. “Thank you for coming here. But,” She paused, trying to pick her words carefully, not wanting to hurt the one person she love so much. “You can’t be seen with me.” She finished, her eyes focused on his face, trying to gage his reaction. Knowing Alaric might think of it the wrong way. So, she added. “It’s not keeping a low profile and it could be dangerous for you. We have to take action to ensure your safety, Lars. And, until I get some sort of vision… I guess it would be safer for you to… not to be seen with anyone… much. We can’t afford to have you dragged into the middle of any form of misfortune.” She eyed him, her eyes begging for him to understand. The passion she felt in protecting him drowned out the negative feelings for a while. At that time, her energy and her thoughts were focused on him.

As Lars held Prue in his arms, he knew that she was indeed going through quite a lot of emotional turmoil. He understood that she was indeed the type who would rather keep her feelings to herself rather than tell anyone what it is. When she turned to face him and as she buried her face on his chest, he gently stroked her back as he tried comforting her from the pain she felt. He knew that she would not really tell him directly what happened so he decided to just let it rest for a while. Deep inside though, he began to wonder what really happened during the unfortunate event. Even though he was grateful to Adrian for filling him in on the details, it was apparent that there were some aspects of the story that was purposely left out, maybe influenced by her wishes. He then silently cursed himself for being unable to help her in her most vulnerable moments. He wondered whether he was quite a useless and weak-willed boyfriend for her. Therefore, he was not surprised when she gently pushed him away and faced him. Maybe she’s going to tell me off for being useless, he thought. He then lowered his head in shame and waited for what she had to say.
The next few words that rolled off her tongue was something that indeed surprised him. He expected a chastising from her but what she said next made him realize that she was talking about his death prophecy once again. At once, he knew that when it comes to this aspect, their roles were reversed for she was the one who strived to protect him by invoking visions. His feeling of shame intensified for it was because of the prophecy that he was unable to do anything for her. Even if he knew that he was more than capable of protecting her, the mere fact that she feared for his safety was too much for him to bear. He then willed himself to listen as she talked more about him being safe if he wasn’t seen much with other people. He immediately nodded in understanding and merely looked at her in awe. He really admired her courage and her protective instincts towards him. It was as if he was the one being taken care of instead of the other way around.
“I understand, well it’s not really hard to do isn’t it?” he then said, sadness permeating his voice. “It’s just that…it’s been a while since I last saw you and I am worried about you,” he added, turning his back on her, trying to hide the numerous emotions that masked his face. He then let out an audible, strangled sigh before he managed to speak. “You don’t need to push yourself too much for me, I am doing my best to stay out of danger. You know, what is actually worrying me is the fact that I could not help you with what you are going through right now. It pains me to know that you are suffering alone without me knowing what is going on.” He then turned to face her and took a few steps, ending up right in front of her. “You know we’re both in this together, we promised right? Please don’t do this to me, I beg you,” he then said, as he leaned towards her and rested his head on her shoulder.

Prudence, just by seeing Alaric, managed to find a renewed strength. But, this did not last for long for her new fire of strength was snuffed out at the sight of Alaric’s reaction. She was about to comfort him with words when he turned his back on her. Then, she realized it was wrong of her to tell him to stay away… especially since he just got there and that they have not seen each other in days. On top of it all, she almost died two days ago and here she was pushing him away when he was probably worried. Did he know? For a moment, she found herself at a lost. She and Alaric were only together for a week and she was already unconsciously hurting him. She lowered her gaze and sighed with Alaric. Prudence was caught off guard when he suddenly turned to face her. But, the surprise brought about by his gestures was nothing compared to the astonishment that coursed through her veins upon hearing his next words. She had expected that he knew quite a bit, at the very least, and she had expected that he would just nod and tell her that she was right to be worried about his death prophecy. He did none of the two.
She felt her resolve to ask him to stay away along with the urge to break up with him just to make him leave her with her troubles. Prudence did not want him anywhere near Peter, who was capable of making him look all bloody and dead in the forbidden forest. That particular scene from the vision gave her chills and she felt apprehension compress her insides just by merely thinking about it. Then, this made her realize that he was probably just as worried about her and she had been doing nothing but shunning him out. Prue hung her head in shame. Alaric always told her what was going on with his life and she always did the opposite. She always had this high wall up that was specifically assigned to keep Alaric out especially if on the other side there was going to be potential danger for him. Maybe she just had to break up with him to stop this cycle once and for all because since the beginning she had been unintentionally hurting him…
Tic. Tic. Tic. She found herself unable to do it. She loved him too much to hurt him like that… Alaric closed the distance between them and she just stood rooted on the spot. As he rested his head on her shoulder, she just allowed him to relax for a while since she was still at a lost for words. “Yes, we did… I’m so sorry, Lars.” She said, after a while, her voice barely audible. She put her arms around him and finally looked up to see his face. “It’s just… a lot happened and I don’t want to add to your troubles. You already have a lot in your head right now.” She looked away, feeling so ashamed of herself for she knew that no matter what her excuse was, it would not change the fact that she kept him out of her life’s loop. “These past few days, I realized that we are in the same situation. The only difference is that… there is a prophecy for you and I… I’m just one prophecy short.” She informed him with a small smile on her lips in the hopes to lighten the weight of the words. “But it’s going to be alright… this new situation will give me an insight as to how you, as an object of a prophecy, might feel about it all…” She said with a chuckle, that sounded dangerously nearing hysteria, to calm and reassure him. The truth was, she was afraid to die and she wanted to reassure them both them that this was all for the best. “I just did not want to worry you, I’m sorry.” She quickly added, staring into his eyes and begging him silently to understand.
