Kendra chewed on the end of her long wooden rod instead of a quill, she refused to use a feather quill. The very sight of one upset her deeply. She didn't know why. But it was part of her anxiety while writing exams, surrounded by at least a dozen scribbling quills. She found it hard to concentrate on the theory of charms. The boy next to Kendra broke his quill against his paper, she turned and gazed at her friend since first year. He did not know of her unusually violent hate of quills. She liked to keep such things buried deep within. Kendra quickly offered over one of her own pens. Claudius laughed and shook his head. He pushed Kendra's hand back toward her own desk and having a spare quill in his other hand, quickly went back to work.
Kendra's gaze circled the room slowly, she pulled a small piece of chocolate from her back no larger than her small finger and ate it with her head hunched to avoid the professor. The taste of it distracted her from the scratching quills for the moment. She held it gingerly between her teeth and sucked on it occasionally to prolong the taste rather than just consuming it. She started to write on the parchment in front of her but the professor's voice stopped her and all the quills around her. He had called an end to the exam. Kendra sat up and gulped the chocolate down her throat. She looked down at the short, unfinished paragraph she had hastily scribbled. A tear formed in her eye, she would need this class in order to qualify for the best healing jobs. As she re-read the massed jungle of words, she realized even what she had jotted made no sense whatsoever. The Professor called her name to present the exam, Kendra began to sob and bolted from the classroom suddenly.
She was persued, of course. By the professor and her friend. Her friend had caught her first and held her as their professor was catching up to them. Kendra felt his grip on her upper arm. She turned to face him slowly. He loosened his grip when he saw the dark glare she cast upon him. Despite his small retreat, Kendra lifted both her hands and clawed at his face in a feral rage. She drew blood but he was too swift for her and got away before he lost an eye. The professor gave a perplexed stare at the wild-eyed girl who was usually so sweet.
If my slight muse do please these curious days,
The pain be mine, but thine shall be the praise
