Kat had been curious about the ring ever since her younger sister had been so elaborately presented with it. That ghastly Gaunt man that she was supposed to call 'father' had made a big deal about it. And so, Kat had stolen it from little Meg the first chance she had gotten. It was the least she could do, after her stepfather's pathetic attempt to excite her jealousy. She wore it now, on her smallest finger. It was an ugly beast of a thing. Alot of the lads in the common room made compliments to it though so Kat had taken to wearing it around the castle. Kat sat at the Slytherin table, she noticed Morgana approaching. Instead of hiding the ring, she held it out displaying it openly as she pretended to inspect it closely. She had already looked it over thoroughly beforehand and so was mostly sneaking peaks towards Meggy to see if she would look over at her and the ring. Kat would have to say something soon, she had grown weary of the ring's weight and was quite disappointed that her 'bright' sister hadn't caught onto who the thief was by now. But being the quiet girl she was, Kat really didn't want to call out to her sister. So she hoped Meggy would notice it soon.

Clothes... Books... Papers... Quills littered the floor of Morgana Hydra Gaunt's dorm room. She collapsed on her perfectly made bed and groaned to herself. Meg buried her face in her hands and sobbed quietly. It was official... the ring her father had given her had been stolen. She had wanted to believe that it was misplaced but after looking for it everyday for the past month. Meggy had not noticed immediately of the ring's disappearnce because it was too big for her skinny fingers and thus she rarely wore it. Lysandra popped her head inside the room and gasped, "Megs?!? What on earth has happened inside here? You d better clear this mess before dinner. You know how grouchy Linda can get."
Meggy peeked from behind her fingers and gave half a nod in Lysa's directions. When her friend had left, Morgana pushed herself into a sitting position and wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve. Her father was going to kill her... for sure. He had been hesitant to give her the ring but being the only Gaunt heir, he had finally come to the conflusion that she should have it. Meg stood up and staring throwing her belongings into random drawers. She looked detached and unlike her usual neat freak self. Ten minutes later, she was on her way towards the Great hall. She stopped outside the oak doors and took a deep calming breath. Meg clutched her hands to her temples and closed her eyes for a brief moment.
Morgana pushed the door open and strolled inside the Great Hall. She fixed her gaze on the Ravenclaw table and started walking in its direction. As she walked, her eyes wondered around the room. And then she saw it. The familiar glint of her heirloom. Meg paused in her tracks and gasped, her hand instantly shooting up in front of her mouth. After several seconds her arm fell limply to her side and she diverted herself towards the Slytherin table. Her eyes were narrowed and she looked both shocked and outraged at the same time. Kat had always been hostile towards her, but Meg had never thought she could be that vile. Morgana stopped in front of her half sister and said, "Alsciaukat Lycoris Black... how could you?!? Do you not know that stealing is improper."

Kat turned to her little sister. There was a faint trace of glee in her eyes though she did her best to mock surprise at the accusation. Her cloak fell soon however and Kat smirked coldly. "What do you mean, Morgana?" Meg knew that Kat hated her real name. Kat glowered at her then and warned Meggy coldly. "And don't call me that."

Meggy looked down at her older sister incrediously. She grimaced at the sound of her full name. Meg blinked her eyes furiously and replied hotly, "You know perfectly well what I mean." The young Gaunt grabbed Kat's hand and tried to pry the ring of her fingers while snapping, "I shall call you whatever pleases me Alsciaukat." Meggy made a huge emphasis on her sister's name on purpose and glared at her angrily.

Kat jerked her hand back away from Meggy but could not break her grasp. She didn't wish to keep the ring, but Meggy's sheer lack of respect for Kat was working against Kat's want to be rid of the ring. "Calm down, you silly witch!" Kat finally pulled her hand free of Morgana's grasp as she stood up from her perch. "Before you cause a scene. Now what are you talking about?" Kat removed the ring from her finger and began to throw it into the air playfully as she smiled at Morgana.

As soon as the words were out of Kat's mouth, Meggy froze and loosened her grip on her older sister. Kat instantly seized the opportunity to snatch her hand away, leaving a mortified Morgana staring down at a plate of sausages. When Kat started speaking again, Meg looked up. She placed her arms on either side of her hips and listened to Kat with a frown. Meggy inhaled deeply before saying, "Father gave me that ring. I have been looking for it all over the place. You know how much it means to us Gaunts." As soon as the last sentence was put of her mouth Morgana froze, instantly acknowledging her mistake. She looked at Kat apologetically and stammered, "I'm sorry... Kat... I didn't..." Her words got cut off.

Kat caught the ring in her right hand. She hooped the ring around her long finger and her right hand went up to cover her face for a moment. Kat looked lost. Little Meggy had reminded Kat why she had taken the ugly thing in the first place and now Kat wasn't so sure about giving it back. Forgetting her helping of sausages, Kat began to walk past Meggy towards the entrance hall doors. She walked backwords as she kept speaking to Morgana "I haven't the faintest idea of what you're babbling about. Leave me alone and you can tell your father to as well." When she had finished speaking, Kat turned and hurried through the doors of the great hall. She sped up the stairs to the first floor and parked herself on a lonely bench beside a suit of armor. Kat began inspecting the ring more closely, wondering if it was just a useless bit of rather ugly jewelry or if it had some magical properties.

When Kat denied knowing what was going on for yet another time, she forgot her embarrassment and clutched her hands into fists. "Enough with this nonsense Kat." She started following her sister aware of the other students staring at them, "Give it back!" Morgana gulped at the mention of her father. She noted the bitterness in Kat's words and added, "When I tell him... and mother... they will be awfully upset with you." But Kat was already gone from the Great Hall. Meggy broke into a run and followed her sister upstairs. She watched Kat from a distance for several minutes before approaching her.

Kat had heard what Morgana had said as Kat had fled the Great Hall. It might have looked as though Kat was running away from Morgana, but that was not correct. In truth, Kat knew Mogana would attract too much attention there as long as Kat held onto the ring. And Kat didn't like being the center of attention. She was not surprised when Morgana approached her again. Kat looked up at Meggy and yawned. "You have no proof. I will tell them you're lying." Kat was bluffing, she knew their parents would believe Meggy over her if Meggy told them Kat was a werewolf. Kat no longer had the energy to play, she was growing tired of this game.

With a raised eye brow, Meggy scoffed silently. She was not a mean person but Kat always brought out the worse in her. "We both know that they will believe me," she replied frostily. Morgana bit her lower lip and kept staring at her sister. Her expression changed and she started pleading with her, "Please Kat give it back. I promise I won't tell you on... honest." She made a cross on her heart and looked at Kat with her puppy dog eyes.

Kat smiled at Meggy's action. Meg could always make Kat smile. It was strange. Not very many people could. "Do you know what it does?" Kat lifted the ring off her finger and passed it back to Meggy. Kat almost rolled it back into her pocket. She thought the thing looked ugly and she never expected to keep it this long, but Kat seemed like she needed it for something. "I don't even like it. It's ugly. Take it then." Kat dropped it on the floor before Meg could grab it. She ignored the sound it made as it landed on the floor and turned away from Morgana.

Morgana looked confused. She gave a shrug and after a while said, "Nothing... Father just asked me to keep it safe... because it has been in the family for uhm... some time." She could not remember for how long her father had said. Meggy shrugged it off and reached out for the ring, but Kat dropped it to the floor. Meggy gasped and bent down to pick it up. She stroked the ring in between her fingers and mumbled, "It s not ugly..." Meg paused and looked up. She pouted and asked, "Why are you always picking on me?"

Kat looked at Meggy severely, defiance was something that Kat could never stomach too well. She had to restrain herself from snapping at the young Gaunt. "It is ugly. And not even a Gaunt is pathetic enough to keep an heirloom that ugly with no powers." Kat went silent, she began plotting ways to get this information from Mavado. There was a myriad of possibilities; polyjuice, veritaserum, force. Kat answered Meggy's inquiry late. But with a cold, uncaring tone. "Because both of your parents despise me. And I have no one else to pick on." Kat lied, she did have plenty others to humiliate and torment. She only added the last statement to distract from the first one. She hadn't meant to actually answer Meggy's query. But the distraction the ring caused in Kat's mind let her tongue slip.

Megs looked up at her older sister with wide eyes, not comprehending Kat's hostility towards her. She gulped and replied boldly, "No it's not... and we are not pathetic. We only cherish our ancestory." Her last sentence, echoed her father's frequent words. Morgana stood up and pocketed her ring, just in case Kat changed her mind. Her sister's words made her pause. She at her almost in shock. Kat could not really believe that, could she? Their father was closer to his biological children but she had never seen him mistreat the others. As for their mother she was... well she was... Meggy wrinkled her nose slightly and sighed softly.

Kat was annoyed by Meggy's response. Mostly because Megs was repeating something Kat had heard her father say alot. Kat couldn't help but be hostile toward the Gaunts. Every Black that Kat knew was hostile toward them. Kat liked her grandparents alot but wished no harm to her innocent, little sister. It was a very depressing affair. Kat's grandmother told her that it was her mother's fault. Whereas Kat's mother told her it was Kat's fault. Kat truthfully didn't care. She really just wanted people to bury it and try to move on. Kat grew angry when Megs didn't respond to her other statement. She could tell herself what Meggy was thinking. Kat hated when people praised Mavado Gaunt, he was a repulsive man. Kat's Gaunt 'relations' always pretended he was doing Kat a favor letting her live with them. "Just because you do not see something, does not mean it isn't there." Kat sighed in annoyance, she had thought Meggy would have been more clever than to overlook such things.
